About this Event
AVC: Black History Month " Walking Tour”
Join us this February for our Black History Month " Walking Tour”: Presented by Afro Van Connect and Black Space Media INC. Every Saturday afternoon this February at 1pm we will be celebrating the illustrious history of the African Descent community in BC. Participants will be guided through the historic neighbourhood of Strathcona located in East Vancouver as we discuss the impact, heritage, and culture of BC’s African Descent Community from 1858 to Now!
The Black History Walking tour encapsulates the history of Black Pioneers like Mifflin Gibbs, “The King of English Bay” Seraphim “Joe” Fortes, Rock Roll Legend Jimi Hendrix and much more. The Intention of this tour is to amplify the African descent communities’ culture and heritage in BC, honouring the lived and shared experience of our ancestors on the unceded territory of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
The Presence of the African descent community in BC has always been in a flux since their first arrival. However, as time continues to unfold the African descent community in BC has proven their greatest strength is the ability to adapt, evolve, and add value. Reinventing what it means to be and belong in the northwest.
Kor Kase, Co-Founder of Afro Van Connect (AVC), will be hosting the tour providing an overview of Black history in Vancouver and guiding patrons through the Georgia Viaduct Mural, Nora Hendrix's Place, Hogan's Alley, and the Fountain Chapel.
Each participant will receive a " BC Black History Novelty Quiz” Created by Sadie Kuehn (Community Leader and Activist)
