About this Event
AV CLUB is an ongoing program of curated 16mm short film screenings designed to provoke discussion, create awareness of unique library resources held by the Special Collections Division of the Miami-Dade Public Library System and generate enthusiasm for learning and research. Tonight, celebrate the 130th anniversary of Miami's incorporation as a city on July 28, 1896.

The history of Miami from 1926 to the end of the 1970s is presented. Using still photographs, newsreel footage, posters, and interviews, key events in Miami's development are shown. Highlights are: beginning of air travel with PanAm, Al Capone, assassination attempt on FDR, the New Deal, Word World II troop encampments, Viriginia Beach, the integration movement of the 1950s, the Cuban exile community, and the Decade of Progress.
A FEW THINGS I KNOW ABOUT MIAMI, 1987. 25 min.

This film consists of five segments which interweave archival footage with interviews to highlight aspects of Miami's history. The segments are: ON FLAGLER STREET-Jimmy Barnett, long-time manager of the Olympia Theater shares about Miami's old movie palaces; DOWN ON SECOND STREET - Clyde Killens and Stanley Sweeting reminisce about the Black entertainment mecca of the 1920's and 1930's; WAITING AT THE STATION - Chuck and Dick Beall take the viewers on a trip downtown and discuss railroad travel; NIGHT LIGHTS - father and son neon benders, Alphonso and Albert Melo, share about their craft; ON THE RIVER - Plato Cox, king of the river, and a trip in a tow boat.

This startling suspense drama presents a future vision of Miami. Two young boys are followed through the action of visiting a public building in which is housed exhibits of a vague nature. A meditation on ecology and our relationship to the shared environment.
Vincent Nastasi, museum registrar at The Barnacle Historic State Park, will offer a guided tour of the library exhibit space and give unique insights into the collection.
Unique items from the MDPLS Special Collections will be on display in the library.
Latino Outdoors is providing celebratory snacks and refreshments.
For this outdoor event, attendees are welcome to bring picnics, lawn seating or blankets.
Doors will open at 6:30pm; films will start at 7:30pm.
Parking is available across Main Highway in the Playhouse Lot.
