Autumn in the Lickeys Saturday Short Walk on 24 October 2026

Join this leisurely ramble with a Birmingham Ramblers group leader and enjoy social walking with our friendly members.

A 5.5 mile walk with no stiles taking in the Autumn views in the Lickey Hills.

Meeting arrangements:

Meet at Barnt Green train station by 10.45 am.

Travel by train: Catch the 10.15 am train which leaves Birmingham New Street station stopping at stations along the line and arrives Barnt Green 10.42 am. This train usually departs New Street from platform 12, but please check first. The full return fare from New Street at time of writing is £6.00. West Midlands pass holders need to buy a ticket from Longbridge to Barnt Green.

If driving : There is a car park at Barnt Green station which at time of writing is £2.50 on a Saturday or park on the approach road to the station.

Walk Description:

From Barnt Green station we walk north along an avenue of beech trees which should be looking good at this time of year. In part our walk will follow the “Woodpecker Trail” as it heads across Fiery Hill Road, through Cherry Hill Coppice, Pinfields Wood, and Lickey Warren before arriving at the visitor centre for a break/toilets. The good news is the café at the visitor centre has quite recently reopened.

After our break we detour a short distance to a spot on Bilberry Hill to enjoy some lovely autumnal views. Next we follow a heathland and wooded route along Cofton Hill, then turn off to follow a track lined with Douglas firs which stand very impressively above us. These large straight trees were first introduced to Britain in 1827 and are named after the Scottish botanist, David Douglas, who brought seed back from North America.

Back on the main track briefly we return to another part of Lickey Warren, this time following a small stream before picking up our return route to the station including the pleasing avenue of beech trees which started our walk. For those who would like to end the walk with refreshments before the journey home there is a very good cafe by the train station. There are three trains an hour back towards Birmingham.
