Autocrats Vs Democrats and Stanford HAI

On 16 September, the Stanford Australia Association brings together two of Stanford University's leading voices for a single evening in Sydney: Professor James Landay of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI (HAI), and Dr Michael McFaul of the Hoover Institution.

Both will speak at the same event, at the same location, on the same evening, giving members a rare opportunity to hear from AI's foremost researchers and one of the world's leading voices on democracy and autocracy, side by side.

STANFORD HAI - TEACHING FACULTY

Professor James Landay is the Denning Director and co-founder of Stanford HAI, and the Anand Rajaraman and Venky Harinarayan Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University. He will introduce Stanford HAI's work and the members of his visiting teaching team.

Michael Bernsteinis a Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University.

Arvind Karunakaran is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University, core faculty of the Center for Work, Technology, and Organization, and a faculty affiliate of both HAI and the Digital Economy Lab.

Russell Wald is Executive Director of Stanford HAI, where he leads the Institute's work bridging academia, public policy and civil society, overseeing its research, education and outreach missions. Stanford HAI is an interdisciplinary institute, established in 2019, dedicated to advancing AI research, education, policy and practice. It brings together academia, industry, government and civil society to guide the development of AI technologies that enhance human capabilities and benefit society, drawing on Stanford's seven schools to do so.

HOOVER INSTITUTION & FREEMAN SPOGLI INSTITUTE

Dr Michael McFaulis the Peter and Helen Bing Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, the Ken Olivier and Angela Nomellini Professor of International Studies, and Director of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University. He is also an international affairs analyst for NBC News. From January 2012 to February 2014, he served as United States Ambassador to the Russian Federation, having previously spent three years as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Russian and Eurasian Affairs at the National Security Council. Dr McFaul will give an in-depth discussion on:

- The changing global order

- The growing tensions between autocracies and democracies

- Insights from his latest book, Autocrats versus Democrats: China, Russia, America, and the New Global Disorder
