Auti-Tune is a new weekly music show-and-tell group specifically designed for autistic adults. Starting August 28th, it will take place every Wednesday evening at Arts Court in Ottawa. Auti-Tune aims to provide a supportive and adaptive environment where autistic adults can share, create, and enjoy music.
What is the format?
Auti-Tune is a “Show and Tell” circle. We sit in a circle, and each person has a specific amount of time to engage with music. Whether you want to infodump about a music project, lead a sing-along, share an original song, or jam with others, this is your space. It’s a VERY ADAPTED jam, designed to minimize overwhelming chaos and noise.
You do not need to be a musician to participate!
What We Offer:
Inclusive Space: A welcoming venue with a quiet room, dim lighting, and wheelchair-accessible facilities.
Adaptive Gear: Essential equipment like ear muffs and sensory tools to accommodate diverse needs.
What to Expect:
We sit in a circle and take turns going clockwise. When it’s your turn, you can choose to share or pass. Here are some examples of what you can share. Be as creative as you want:
Share a song
infodump about a music special interest
Talk about an idea you are working on.
Lead a sing-along
Play a song with just one or two people
Play a song by yourself
Lead the whole group in an improvised jam
Share your favorite song on some speakers.
You’ll have about 5-10 minutes per round, and we’ll go around as many times as we can in the time available. Feel free to play by yourself or get creative and improvise with others!
Use the quiet room for a break if you’re feeling overwhelmed. We’ll have ear muffs and earplugs available if the sound becomes too much.
This is an adapted jam session designed to minimize overwhelming noise and allow everyone to engage with music in a way that feels comfortable for them. While we aim to make this as accessible as possible, we acknowledge that accessibility is never perfect. Music can’t always be quiet, so if you’re particularly sound-sensitive, please use your discretion and take the breaks you need.
PARKING:
There is parking at the Rideau Centre.
LOCATION:
It is located in a room called the "Atelier" in Arts Court. Arts Court has multiple entrances. 2 Daly is the main entrance, where there will be a front desk person who can help direct you. This entrance has many stairs. If you prefer a more accessible entrance, please enter at SAW Gallery (67 Nicholas). This is the wheelchair accessible entrance. If you enter at 67 Nicholas you will go straight through the hallway to elevator B and press 1, turn left to elevator A and press 2. The "Atelier" will be on your right.
