Atlanta’s landscapes are changing rapidly. Towering cranes, cleared forests, and endless construction zones are reshaping this city right before our eyes. Join photographer Peter Essick and writer Dan Chapman for an evening that explores this transformation from a whole new perspective.
Their book, Work in Progress, captures Atlanta’s dramatic transformation through four years of drone photography, revealing the evolving landscapes of construction sites across the metro area. Chapman’s accompanying essay, Building Our Future in the Urban South, provides context and urgency, exploring what Atlanta’s rapid growth means for our communities, environment, and identity.
Together, Chapman and Essick utilize their art and drone technology to tackle contemporary issues of sprawl, construction, and development and the beauty and pain of Atlanta’s growth.

About the Speakers:
Peter Essick is a photographer, teacher, and editor with 30 years of experience working with National Geographic Magazine. He specializes in nature and environmental themes. Named one of the forty most influential nature photographers in the world by Outdoor Photography Magazine UK. His goal is to make photographs that move beyond documentation to reveal in careful compositions the human impact of development as well as the enduring power of the land.
Dan Chapman is a longtime writer, reporter, and lover of the outdoors. He grew up in Washington D.C. and Tokyo, the son of a newspaper man and an English teacher. He worked for Congressional Quarterly, The Winston-Salem Journal, The Charlotte Observer, and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He has also reported from Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. He currently writes stories about conservation in the South for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He lives in Decatur, Georgia with his wife Bita and their two boys, Samad and Naveed.
