Stewart has written extensively about the rise of religious nationalism, the erosion of church–state separation, and threats to democracy. Her books include The Good News Club (2012), The Power Worshippers (2020)—the basis for the film God & Country (2024)—and her newest title, Money, Lies and God: Inside the Movement to Destroy American Democracy.
