KLEO (Kinross-shire Local Events Organisation) and Loch Leven Community Library are delighted that author Dr Sandy Winterbottom is coming to Kinross as part of the Kinross-shire Winter Festival on Tuesday 18 November at 7pm at Loch Leven Community Library.Whales, whaling, Antarctica and the climate crisis, all come-together in a fascinating new nonfiction book, The Two-Headed Whale, from debut author Dr Sandy Winterbottom.
In 2016, Sandy sailed from Montevideo on a tall-ship voyage following in the footsteps of the great explorer Shackleton. On landing at South Georgia, her pristine image of Antarctica was shattered by the remains of the industrial-scale whaling stations that now litter the island. It is estimated that two-million whales were killed in Antarctic waters alone during the 20th Century, and mostly used for fertiliser and pet food. In this talk, illustrated with photos from her voyage along with archive images from the historial whaling expeditions of the mid-twentieth century, Sandy will explore what the history of Antarctic whaling can teach us about about the way we exploit the natural resources of our planet? What lessons can we learn and how might it help us to understand the present-day climate and ecological emergency.
