Wed August 13th – David Block: Ardmore author, journalist and award-winning documentary producer and director will discuss his book, Born Blind, and his various documentaries. After the discussion, we will view and discuss, How Sweet the Sound.David is legally blind since birth. For over 30 years, he has worked as a documentary producer and a freelance journalist. He has had over 1,500 articles published in a variety of publications, from the New York Times to the Philadelphia Inquirer. He has also made eight documentaries, with some winning film festival awards.
Born Blind, the Traumas and the Triumphs, is a compilation of 5 short stories. In these David shares the feelings, observations, and analyses that have marinated inside him as he contemplates the life of being born blind. It’s a mix of fiction and non-fiction, but all blended to reflect the reality he has shared with others.
How Sweet the Sound, is about a blind street singer named John Sutton, a close friend of David’s who busked at Philadelphia’s Suburban Station from the 1980s until COVID. Although John sometimes struggled financially, he was in many respects a wealthy man. He had a beautiful singing voice, and many people loved him. People often gave him money because listening to his melodic tone made them happy.
David will have copies of his book for sale at the event.
