Author and Notre Dame professor Mark T. Johnson comes up from Helena to detail his research on how Chinese residents of Montana maintained their traditions. At one point Chinese made up more than a tenth of the territory's population. What better way to bring in the Chinese New Year than learning about these historic practices that emigrated West, in concert with other peoples around the world. Last time Johnson visited (April 2023) he packed the room and collected research from museum archives, and visited Demersville Cemetery, to add to his understanding of early Chinese Montanans. Raised in Great Falls, Johnson has lived and worked in Shanghai. Copies of his recently published "The Middle Kingdom under the Big Sky: A History of the Chinese Experience in Montana" will be available for sale and signing.
Don't miss this skillful, compelling presenter.
