JewGirl is Marcie Maxfield's unflinchingly honest and often very funny account of what it means to be Jewish and female in America, where "privileged" and "at risk" have never been mutually exclusive. Through a series of interconnected essays, Maxfield explores identity, belonging, family, women's issues, antisemitism, and the strange math of being both too much and not enough for everyone else's idea of who she's supposed to be.
This isn't a book about feeling like an outsider looking in. It's a book from someone who's lived it, laughed through it, and has a lot to say about it. It's for anyone who has ever felt like they don't fully belong in the box they were handed.
Marcie Maxfield is an award-winning novelist, essayist, and speaker whose work blends humor, authenticity, and sharp cultural observation. She is the author of JewGirl: On Being and Belonging, winner of the 2026 Next Generation Indie Book Award for Women’s Issues, and the novel Em’s Awful Good Fortune. Her play about growing up girl received an Encore! Producers' Award at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. Originally from Detroit, Maxfield moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in media, marketing, and publishing and now calls Palm Springs home.
Jonathan L. Friedmann, Ph.D., is the co-founder and vice president of Ezzree Institute, an interreligious graduate school training chaplains and spiritual leaders. He also serves as admissions director and associate professor at the International Institute for Secular Humanistic Judaism; leader of Adat Chaverim – Congregation for Humanistic Judaism in Los Angeles; president of the Western States Jewish History Association; director of the Jewish Museum of the American West; and co-host of Amusing Jews, an interview show celebrating Jewish contributors and contributions to American popular culture. Jonathan is the author or editor of over thirty books on music, history, biblical studies, and religion & popular culture, most recently Chai Noon: Jews and the Cinematic Wild West (University of Wisconsin Press, 2025).
