ABOUT THE BOOK:
George Washington, celebrated general of the Continental Army, shocked many by resigning his commission. His humility led to his presidency six years later. Barbara Carroll Roberts's book offers young readers a nuanced portrayal of Washington and his era.
As commanding general of the Continental Army, George Washington was one of the most celebrated and recognizable figures of the American Revolution. So it was a shock when he voluntarily resigned his commission, giving up a powerful position instead of seeking to capitalize upon it. In Barbara Carroll Roberts’s carefully researched account, young readers will encounter a nuanced portrayal of Washington and his contemporaries during a moment that would influence the course of a young nation and lead to the creation of a representative democracy of, by, and for the people.
