Abstract: A Quick Guide to Cave Photography

Chris will present an introduction to the fundamentals of cave photography, focusing on how lighting choices can dramatically change an image. Using real-world examples from underground, he’ll demonstrate basic photographic techniques and briefly touch on post-processing and editing. While image editing is a deep subject worthy of its own workshop, this session is designed to give cavers a practical foundation for taking better photographs on their next trip underground.
Bio:
Chris Bell is an active caver with the Central Indiana Grotto and an accomplished cave photographer whose work has been recognized at National Speleological Society conventions. His photographs have earned multiple Graphic Art Salon awards, including Merit Awards, and have appeared on the covers of publications such as the Central Indiana Grotto Newsletter, the Indiana Karst Conservancy Update, the Indiana Cave Capers guidebook and the 2026 NSS Convention guidebook.
When he’s not underground with a camera, Chris is also an aspiring musician who performs locally throughout Indiana. Tonight he’ll share techniques, challenges, and stories from the unique world of cave photography, along with the images and experiences that have earned his work recognition within the caving community.
