Kelp Forests in Peril; Reason for Hope
Dr. Scott Rumsey
Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission
Kelp forests are among the most productive and biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth. Kelp forests foster the species diversity and visually stunning scenery we crave as divers. Moreover, they provide essential nursery habitat for many commercial and recreational fisheries. In his talk Scott will provide an overview of West Coast kelp forest ecology, underscoring the complex web of interactions that sustains them. He will summarize the threats facing these vital ecosystems such as marine heatwaves, climate change, disease, and the over harvest of keystone species. Once lost, kelp forests are extremely difficult to recover. Scott will conclude by highlighting some current kelp restoration efforts.
