SCGS August 2026 Meeting and Lecture

Meeting will be available in-person (at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa) or virtual (Zoom).

Monday, August 3 at 6:00 PM

South Coast Geological Society invites you to attend our July 2026 meeting and lecture! Paul Parmentier, former SCGS president, will present a short history of the Congo, which pertains to the modern worldwide use of minerals from that country. Paul will present an overview of the country's geology, its abundant natural and mineral resources, and the societal significance of the extraction of minerals from the Congo to the world. Your cell phone and EV carry a significant portion of the Congo's wealth through Coltan, tin, copper, and cobalt exploitation.

Speaker Information:

Paul Parmentier, former President of SCGS, was born in the copper-rich southern part of the former Belgian Congo, where he lived until age 16. He earned his BS from the University of Brussels, Belgium and an MSc from the University in Kyushu, Japan, a long time ago.

Paul worked for 5 years in geothermal exploration followed by more than 30 years in environmental geology in the Los Angeles area. As Paul felt that day-job detailed studies of gas stations and former refineries were too far from true geology, he became active with the South Coast Geological Society to participate in monthly talks and annual filed trips.

He retired to New Mexico, where he is now secretary of the New Mexico Geological Society.
