Join us in the fight to defend the rights of our immigrant neighbors and our entire community at our monthly community organizing meeting on Wednesday, August 27, at 6:00pm at the Eugene First Christian Church at 1166 Oak Street! This month, we will be discussing our new campaign against Flock cameras, other ongoing grassroots organizing work and plans for the coming months.
In recent months, the Eugene Police Department (EPD) has been secretly installing AI-powered Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPR) throughout Eugene, and the Springfield Police Department (SPD) has plans to do the same. Developed and sold by “Flock Safety,” a private company, these cameras use AI to scan and store images of cars, trucks, motorcycles, and even bicycles. They not only capture license plates, but other characteristics like dents and stickers to create a “digital fingerprint” of every vehicle that passes by. Flock then stores this information in a nationwide database that can be accessed by law enforcement anywhere. This includes ICE, federal police, and local police departments from other states. There have been documented cases in several states, including Oregon, of ICE accessing the system through local law enforcement to track and detain immigrants. It’s also been used by states like Texas to hunt down women who go out of state for reproductive healthcare.
To make things worse, neither EPD, SPD, nor any other city official requested any input from the people of Eugene and Springfield before signing these contracts! The leasing, installation, and maintenance of this system is funded by our tax dollars, initiated by the Chiefs of Police, and the contract signed by city managers, who none of us voted for. So we have launched a campaign to get this new mass surveillance technology out of our community!
Join us on Wednesday, August 27 at 6pm at the First Christian Church to get involved, see you there! ✊
