Audition announcement:“The Trip to Bountiful” is a classic American play written by Horton Foote and directed by Tim Stuff. Carrie Watts, although living with her adult son and daughter-in-law, feels lonely and isolated in the big city. Carrie dreams of returning to the idyllic town of Bountiful, TX where she grew up. The play follows her journey home and poignantly explores the themes of family, nostalgia, memory, identity, and hope.
Auditions will be held at the Penfield Rec Center at 1985 Baird Rd, Penfield, NY 14526. The Penfield Players welcome actors of all genders, ethnicities, body shapes and sizes, and abilities.

There will be signage and/or volunteers to direct you to the stage or gym.
Auditioners should come prepared to read from the script; familiarity with the play is important. Please contact Tim Stuff ([email protected]) with any questions or for a copy of the script.
Please bring a resume and headshot if available and be prepared to list your conflicts for the months of March and April. There can be no conflicts during tech week and performances.

If you are unable to attend either night of in-person auditions, you may submit a video audition. This should include your name, contact information, and a performance of a contemporary monologue or reading of a scene from the play. Video auditions should be sent to [email protected] and will be accepted only until 10pm on Monday, February 10.
Character Breakdowns:
Carrie Watts – Female presenting; can play 70s. Lives with her son and his selfish and domineering wife in a one-bedroom apartment in Houston. She is feisty, clever, gentle, and determined. Her faith is very important to her, and she is constantly humming hymns. The entire play is about her journey. Performer may be asked to sing, though singing ability is not required.
Ludie Watts – Male presenting; can play 40s. Carrie’s son. Well-meaning but weak. He has trouble standing up to his wife and is torn between her and his mother. He carries the weight of having to support his family on a low paying job.
Jessie Mae Watts – Female presenting; can play 40s. Ludie’s wife. Selfish and entitled. She butts heads with her mother-in-law and though she loves Ludie, she feels resentful of being saddled with Carrie and not being able to afford what she wants in the world.
Thelma – Female presenting; can play 20s. Sweet and warm. A young woman who meets Carrie on her journey. Thelma is carrying her own worries and family tensions. She bonds with Carrie and wants to help her.
Sheriff – Male presenting; can play 50s. Tasked with returning Carrie to her family, he empathizes with her and wants to maintain her dignity.
Roy – Any Gender; any age. A ticket agent. Kind and sympathetic.
Houston Ticket Takers (2) – Any Gender; any age. Patient, but all business.
(Sheriff, Roy, and Ticket Takers will double in non-speaking ensemble roles. There may be 1 or 2 additional non-speaking ensemble roles cast.)
