SYNOPSIS
Based on the novel by Shirley Jackson, Hill House has remained empty and silent except for the daily visits of its grumbling caretaker, Mrs. Dudley. Its isolation is broken by the arrival of Dr. Montague, an investigator of supernatural phenomena. His mission is to delve into the history of the house and to make some sense of the forces that inhabit it. He is joined by three others, all unacquainted, but all having their particular reasons for accepting Dr. Montague’s invitation. Their visit begins with jovial informality, but their sensibilities are soon jolted by strange and eerie occurrences. They are later joined by Dr. Montague’s wife and a friend, who have come to Hill House for purposes of their own. As subsequent events bear out, they bring on a crisis in which the evil forces of Hill House are goaded to a new fury.
CHARACTERS
Eleanor Vance: The tragic protagonist. She is shy, socially awkward, and emotionally vulnerable due to years of caring for her domineering invalid mother. Isolated and desperately seeking a place to belong, she quickly falls under the malicious spell of Hill House.
Mrs. Dudley: The eerie, grumbling caretaker of the property. She enforces strict boundaries of the estate, notoriously refusing to stay anywhere near the house once the sun sets.
Theodora (Theo): A bold, confident, and artistic young woman. She is everything Eleanor wishes she could be and comes to Hill House after a bitter falling out with her roommate, bringing a lively, though occasionally cynical, energy to the group.
Dr. John Montague: An academic investigator of the supernatural. He leads the psychic research expedition to Hill House in hopes of proving the existence of the occult. He acts as a cultured, patient, and fatherly figure for the group.
Luke Sanderson: The charming and somewhat arrogant heir to the Hill House estate. He is sent by the family to oversee the property during Dr. Montague’s lease, providing a necessary dose of humor but ultimately lacking the grit to rise to the occasion when the danger becomes real.
Mrs. Montague: Dr. Montague’s imperious and self-important wife. She arrives later in the play accompanied by her psychic experiments, often creating an atmosphere of rivalry and disruption rather than helpful research.
Arthur Parker: Mrs. Montague's loyal lackey and traveling companion. He is a headmaster at a boys' school, speaks in abrupt, opinionated bursts, and aids Mrs. Montague's attempts to communicate with the dead spirits.
