SYNOPSIS:
Steel Magnolias by Robert Harling is a heartwarming and poignant play that explores the strength, resilience, and camaraderie of a group of women in a small Louisiana town. Set entirely in Truvy’s beauty salon, the play follows the lives of six distinct yet tightly bonded women as they share laughter, tears, and wisdom while navigating life’s challenges. At the center of the story is Shelby, a spirited young woman whose determination to live life on her own terms despite a life-threatening illness inspires those around her. Through their witty banter, heartfelt moments, and unwavering support for one another, the women reveal the enduring power of friendship and the beauty of finding strength in community.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
TRUVY JONES (presents late 30s-early 40s) Owner of a small town beauty shop. She knows everyone’s business and is no stranger to some fun gossiping. Southern belle. She always has advice for you that comes from the heart and in the form of old country sayings.
ANNELLE DUPUY-DESOTO (presents late teens to early 20s) Very shy and newly licensed cosmetologist. She goes from being very soft-spoken person to outspoken bible-loving Christian who wears her heart on her sleeve.
CLAIREE BELCHER (presents 60s) Widow of the former Mayor of Chinquapin. She is a wealthy granddame with grace and deportment (on the outside) and also knows everyone’s business. She’s the sarcastic one of the group and loves to laugh and poke fun at things that others cry over. Lifelong friend and very close with Ouiser.
SHELBY EATENTON-LATCHERIE (presents early to mid 20s) Prettiest girl in town. Popular and fun loving in spite of fighting diabetes her entire life. She has a loving but weird relationship with her mother and often rebels just for the sake of rebelling.
M’LYNN EATENTON (presents mid 40s-mid-50s) Over-protecting but loving mother of Shelby. Finds the need to have a firm grasp on the world at all times. A busy woman who worries too much for her age.
OUISER (pronounced “Weezer”) BOUDREAUX (presents 60s) Another wealthy grand dame (without the outside grace and deportment of Clariee). Curmudgeon and acidic but loveable and caring underneath the surface. Lifelong friend and very close to Clariee.
