Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, ‘night, Mother by Marsha Norman is a powerful and unflinching drama that unfolds over the course of a single evening. This intimate, gripping play follows a conversation between a mother and her daughter as deep truths and hidden struggles come to light. As the night progresses, the daughter reveals her plan to end her life, forcing both women to confront questions of love, agency, and meaning with honesty and heartbreaking clarity. ‘night, Mother is a profound exploration of human connection and despair that will stay with audiences long after the final line is spoken.

CHARACTERS:
Jessie Cates is a woman in her early to mid 40s. She is a woman who is finally taking control of her own life after years of vulnerability. On this night she is matter-of-fact with her mother, with whom she has been living for a long time. She is setting up a schedule for her mother to follow of the things she’s always done because she plans to K*ll herself, the ultimate taking control of her own life.
Thelma Cates, a woman in her late 60s, has been letting Jessie do her bidding as she’s aged and believes she is in charge. So when Jessie announces her intention Thelma is rattled and tries to regain control and demand, then plead for Jessie to change her mind. This role has more levels, particularly for such a short drama.
