"If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans..." Woody Allen
Making God Laugh follows an American family through thirty years of holidays, beginning in 1980 when Ruthie and Bill's adult children—a priest, an aspiring actress, and a former football star—return home each year. Against the backdrop of familiar traditions, the family navigates shifting relationships and discovers that life rarely follows the script they'd written for themselves. Through decades of holiday gatherings, they learn that the destinations we reach are often more surprising and more human than anything we could have planned.
ROLES AVAILABLE:
Note: Each character ages 30 years throughout the play
RUTHIE (Starts late 40s - early 50s)
The family matriarch - a strong-willed Catholic woman who loves her family deeply but struggles to express it. Firm believer in family values and traditions. Has trouble showing love in the best light but truly wants what's best for her children.
BILL (Starts late 40s - early 50s)
Kind, easy-going husband and father who loves Ruthie completely and is proud of all his children. The family peacekeeper who stands his ground when needed.
RICHARD (Starts mid-late 20s)
The eldest son - ex-football star still finding his way. Chases get-rich-quick schemes and latest trends.
MADDIE (Starts mid-late 20s)
The middle child and only daughter - an actress and lesbian who knows exactly how to push her mother's buttons (and often does). Closest to her father and younger brother.
THOMAS (Starts early-mid 20s)
The youngest and "good son" - studying to be a priest, which thrills Ruthie. A peacekeeper like his father and the go-to person for his siblings.
