ABOUT THE SHOW: Seymour works at a run-down Skid Row florist shop. His hidden love for coworker Audrey is in full bloom, so when a mysterious Venus flytrap-like plant appears, Seymour names it Audrey II in her honor. When he accidentally discovers that the plant thrives on blood, suddenly Seymour has another secret. But this one may come back to bite him. This campy, black-comedy musical takes you somewhere that’s green – and gleefully gruesome. Don’t feed the plants!
ROLES AVAILABLE
Seymour Krelborn: Male, age 25-35. An insecure, put-upon florist’s clerk and eventual hero. He is a genuine, well-meaning man who is taken for granted because of his clumsy ways and poor social skills. Vocal range: A2-G4.
Audrey: Female, age 25-35. The ditzy, secret love of Seymour's life. She has poor self-worth and education, but incredibly good looks and a sweet and vulnerable demeanor. New York accent. Vocal range: G#3- D5.
Mr. Mushnik: Male, age 55-65. The seasoned owner of the failing East Side flower shop and Seymour's nosy boss. He is profit-driven, greedy, and manipulative. Vocal range: G2-F4.
Orin Scrivello: Male, age 30-40. An egotistical dentist with a passion for leather and sadistic tendencies. Audrey's abusive boyfriend, who is targeted by Seymour after seeing him smack Audrey around. Doubles as the three characters in “The Meek Shall Inherit” in Act Two. Vocal range: G2-G4.
The Plant (Audrey II): Puppeteer. An anthropomorphic cross between a Venus flytrap and an avocado, the plant has an appetite for human flesh that is appeased by Seymour. Puppeteer doubles as other sizes of the plant and can double as Skid Row homeless singer but does not have to.
Voice of The Plant: Male, age 20-50. An actor/vocalist located offstage, with the voice of a conniving, street-smart “villain.” A funky R&B voice is best. Vocal range: G2-G4.
Crystal, Ronnette and Chiffon: Female, age 16-25. Street urchins, acting as storytellers and the occasional Greek chorus. Young, hip, and smart, these three girls are the only ones who have a grip on reality. Vocal range: Ab3-F5.
PRE-AUDITION WORKSHOP: There will be a free, optional, pre-audition workshop on Sunday, November 23 from 6-9 p.m. Led by director Rob Lott and music director Justin Davis, this practical workshop is ideal for both newcomers and experienced performers to meet the show’s creative team, learn about the audition process, and practice your audition song and monologue. Bring your sheet music so you can rehearse your audition song. AUDITIONS & CALLBACKS: Auditions will be held on Monday, November 24 and Tuesday, November 25. It is only necessary to attend one night of auditions. Reserve an audition spot: https://outlook.office365.com/book/[email protected]/?ismsaljsauthenabled=true
Please prepare 16-32 measures (no longer than two minutes) of a musical theatre song that best shows your vocal range and who you are as a performer, as well as a one-minute monologue. You also may choose a 16-measure segment from one of the song cuts from the show, which those who are called back will be asked to prepare. However, that is not necessary for the first round and will not give any priority for audition decisions. Song cuts: https://ocalacivictheatre.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Song-cuts-for-Little-Shop.pdf
An accompanist will be provided. No recorded accompaniment or a cappella auditions will be allowed. You must bring printed, legible music or be able to AirDrop a PDF to the accompanist. Please dress appropriately for the dance/movement portion of the audition (no sandals, flip-flops, or open-toed shoes).
For those who are called back, callbacks will be held on Wednesday, November 26 from 6-9 p.m.
You may check out a copy of the script from the box office for one week with a $10 refundable deposit. Please call ahead to make sure a script is in stock. Scripts checked out the week before auditions must be returned by 2 p.m. on Friday, November 21.
No experience is necessary. Newcomers and theatre veterans alike are welcome and encouraged to audition. If you are unable to attend the scheduled auditions, please contact the theatre at (352) 236-2274 about making a separate appointment.
