Elmwood Playhouse will be holding auditions for The 39 Steps, a spy-thriller-romance-funny-fast-farce for four actors. Adapted by Patrick Barlow from the novel by John Buchan, this Tony Award-winning comedy is based on the 1935 film by Alfred Hitchcock. Directed by Margaret Young.
AUDITIONS: Monday, January 26 and Tuesday, January 27 at 7:00PM at Elmwood Playhouse, 10 Park St., Nyack, NY.
CALLBACKS: Thursday, January 29 at 7:00PM (by invitation only).
PERFORMANCES: Friday, May 15th through Saturday, June 6th, 2026 (Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays with possible Wednesdays and Thursdays).
Auditioners wil do some physical activity. Dress for movement.
SHOW DESCRIPTION: Monty Python meets Alfred Hitchcock. A comic send-up of the Hitchcock film, The 39 Steps plunges Richard Hannay into a mystery once Annabella Schmidt talks her way into his apartment, reveals a nefarious spy plot regarding something called “The 39 Steps” and ends up murdered. Accused of her murder, Hannay is soon on the run to uncover the truth that will exonerate him, chased by police, spies and other characters and meeting romance along the way.
Casting four actors:
RICHARD HANNAY (20s – 50s). He/him or they/them, male identifying character. Any race or ethnicity.
ANNABELLA/PAMELA/MARGARET (20s – 50s). She/her or they/them/non-binary/trans – female identifying character. Any race or ethnicity. Actor who possesses strong physical, emotional and comedic abilities. The actor will play three roles.
CLOWN 1 and CLOWN 2 – Any age. They/them, he/him, she/her. Any gender, race, or ethnicity, non-binary welcome. The Clowns execute multiple roles and genders with physical prowess and skillful comedic timing.
