Come out and audition for the winner of the 2025 STAGEtwo Summer Playwriting Workshop!SOCIAL by Alex Nantz
Directed by Megan Nantz
Crystal is looking forward to experiencing life after graduation. She longs to connect with her friends and have a full life. We follow her over the course of 14 years. The entire play is seen through the perspective of personified apps. While Crystal longs for connection with life, the apps long for connection with Crystal. Through the years the apps slowly influence Crystal to such a degree that she cannot function without them. Crystal has to decide who she wants to truly connect with, reality or a digital fantasy.

Young Adult Crystal (F, 18+): A young woman high school graduate. She is vibrant and energetic. Excited about growing up.
Adult Crystal (F, 20’s-30’s) : Same character as Young Crystal but older. A bit more cynical, jaded, and overwhelmed. Longs for connection.
Messenger: A texting app. To be portrayed as the supportive best friend. Loves Crystal. Often waits with patience.
Settings: The phone settings. Can be seen as a helpful tool or controlled annoyance. At times enjoys being of help and others enjoys the chaos.
FaceNovel: A social app that craves attention. Loves to play and is mischievous.
InstaPhoto: A social app that is vain. To be portrayed very snooty and upper class.
Tweeter: A social app that is loud and abrasive. Has a difficult time not making itself the center of attention.
MyPlace: The only app in jeans and a white T-Shirt. Attempts to be professional but is overall sad.
Tumble: A social app that is desperate for attention, any kind of attention. Emotions change quickly.
SnapThat: A social app that is very mischievous and sneaky. Enjoys messages and videos as if they are the latest gossip.
Tik Tik: A social app that is highly energetic and can play multiple
personalities.
Fake FaceNovel: A social app that is clearly a scammer. Speaks almost normally but is bland and ‘Off’.
Artificial: Starts off sweet and innocent while sounding robotic. Ends up being calm, controlling, and intimidating. Very creepy
Dating: A dating app that is a French matchmaker.
Rehearsals will likely be two to three days a week. Days will be decided based upon actors availability. Weekends may be used for rehearsal time
This is a very fast paced satirical comedy. Little to no intimacy in this show. There is a lot of physical comedy. Both versions of Crystal are to be portrayed by a female.
Apps can be played by any gender and age.
There are mentions of politics within the show but no politician, president, or official government action is ever explicitly given. All names and actions that Crystal reads about are to be kept vague. It is not the political figure that is important. It is Crystal’s reaction to reading about the news and how she responds to her friends that is the focus.
