“Sometimes the smallest acts of kindness become legendary.”
Synopsis
Set deep in the tangled green of Sherwood Forest, just outside the rather unfortunate village of Knottingkind, Just Rob, in the Hood is a charmingly absurd comedy about what happens when a perfectly average man named Rob tries to help a neighbor, says something totally innocent—and accidentally becomes a legend.
When Rob helps a neighbor with a broken carrot basket and says, “If you need help, just ask for Rob, in the hood,” a whirlwind of mistaken identity ignites in Sherwood Forest. Villagers hear “Robin Hood,” and suddenly Rob becomes the symbol of rebellion, justice, and hope—all without realizing it. As his accidental legend grows, Rob scrambles to clear things up… but the myth of "Robin Hood" takes on a life of its own.
Add in a bard with too much flair, a squirrel with judgmental eyes, a villainous but insecure Sheriff, and a growing chorus of kind-hearted villagers inspired by Rob’s simple decency—and you have a playful, heartwarming comedy about how small acts of kindness can grow into something legendary.
The real Robin Hood does show up... eventually. And he's got muffins.
Character List
• ROB (Male/Male presenting) - The accidental hero. Earnest, awkward, sweet-natured. Just wants to fix things, not become a legend. Breaks things often. Surprisingly good with twine and spoons.
• MILLY (Female/Female presenting) - A spirited, no-nonsense villager. Rob’s first “rescued” friend. Tends to vegetables and overreacts just enough to be dangerous. Starts the myth of “Robin Hood.”
• ALAN THE BARD (Any gender, flamboyant flair encouraged) - A dramatic storyteller desperate for a legend to sing about. Exaggerates everything. Thinks in rhymes and speaks in verses when overly excited. Invents ballads on the spot.
• MAGS – A Mysterious Old Woman (Female/Female-presenting) - A mysterious, sharp-witted woman of Sherwood Forest who speaks in riddles and seems mysteriously connected to the squirrels. Though often dismissed as eccentric, her cryptic words always come true, nudging Rob toward his potential while unnerving the Sheriff. She blends wisdom, mischief, and comic timing like a forest grandma with a secret agenda.
• THE SHERIFF OF KNOTTINGKIND (Male/Female/Male/Female presenting) - The hilariously villainous local official. Sees themselves as a terrifying enforcer of order. Fails often. Deeply insecure about their image. Dresses dramatically. Possibly allergic to pinecones.
• VILLAGERS (ENSEMBLE) (Any gender, all ages) - Various kind, quirky folks of Sherwood Forest. Includes:
o GEOFFREY (Male/Male-presenting) - Earnest, anxious, and constantly two steps behind the plot. Thinks he’s helpful. Isn’t. But tries very hard. Likely to shout “I’ve got it!” just before tripping over a cabbage.
Loyal to Rob. Terrified of squirrels. Once tried to start a rebellion and accidentally organized a bake sale.
o BETH (Female/Female-presenting) - Smart, skeptical, and absolutely over everyone’s nonsense—except maybe Rob’s. The most rational voice in the village (and possibly the entire forest), Beth often finds herself trying to make sense of the ridiculous events around her. Thinks legends are overrated and ballads are unnecessary—but quietly helps keep things running anyway. The kind of person who doesn’t believe in magic but always has bandages and biscuits in her bag “just in case.”
o DORIS (Female/Female-presenting) - One half of the village’s gossip-and-grumble duo. Dry-witted and formidable, with a permanent squint of suspicion. Acts like she runs the forest—and frankly, might.
o TILLY (Female/Female-presenting) - Doris’s constant companion. Cheerier on the surface, but just as quick with sass and social strategy. Soft spot for Rob. Hard spot for the Sheriff.
o SQUIRREL – Non-speaking but ever-present. Possibly the forest’s true narrator. Can be a puppet, actor in costume, or creative projection.)
• ROBIN HOOD (THE REAL ONE) (Male/Male presenting) - The actual Robin Hood. Charismatic, amused, and a little tired of being a legend. Appears only in the final scene for a hilarious handoff and charming closure. Surprisingly laid-back for a folk hero.
• FRIAR TUCK (Male/Male presenting) - A muffin-wielding spiritual figure. Devout, wise, sarcastic. Offers soulful wisdom and baked goods in equal measure. Possibly drinks tea out of a wooden mug.
• LITTLE JOHN (Male/Male presenting) - Massive in size or presence. Stoic with unexpected depth. Speaks little but says a lot. Has strong opinions about bread.
• THE MERRY MEN (Ensemble – Any gender, all ages) - A chaotic, beloved band of Robin Hood’s legendary followers. Appear in the final act for a comedic, rowdy entrance. Carry instruments, snacks, questionable plans, and impeccable timing. May include:
o Much the Miller’s Son – perpetually confused but sweet
o Will Scarlet – dramatic, flamboyant, fabulous
o Midge the Tinker – always has a gadget or something half-broken
o Any number of ensemble Merry Men/Women/Folk
Strong physical comedy and ensemble chemistry shine here. Roles are flexible.
