About the Play
Set in 1935, Gooseberry Lane follows a group of washed-up Broadway personalities who gather for their annual retreat at the once-glamorous country estate of playwright Lawrence Gooseberry. As old rivalries, forgotten romances, theatrical ambitions, and outrageous secrets collide, the weekend spirals into delightful chaos. Packed with witty dialogue, colorful personalities, and classic farcical twists, Gooseberry Lane is a love letter to the theatre and the wonderfully eccentric people who devote their lives to it.
Characters
VALIANT (40s–60s)
The loyal Gooseberry manservant. Dry wit, intelligent, endlessly patient, and often the voice of reason amidst the madness.
CONSTANCE (30s–60s)
The Gooseberry maid. Warm, clever, quick with a joke, and every bit as witty as Valiant.
WARREN TRENT (50s–70s)
A once-famous Broadway producer whose glory days are behind him. Bombastic, charming, theatrical, and fond of both storytelling and strong drinks.
LADY BELLA VAN WERMISKERKIN STEINER (50s–70s)
A legendary stage actress who firmly believes she's still Broadway's reigning diva. Grand, dramatic, eccentric, and hilariously self-important.
BILLY LEACH (20s–40s)
Monique's secretary, assistant, traveling companion, and reluctant caretaker. Sarcastic, grounded, and constantly cleaning up everyone else's messes.
UNIQUE MONIQUE (30s–50s)
A glamorous diva convinced she's destined for stardom. Temperamental, funny, dramatic, and perpetually feuding with Bella.
ELBERT LOOVEBUG (30s–60s)
An awkward solicitor with an increasingly suspicious story. Earnest, mysterious, socially uncomfortable, and unexpectedly hilarious.
LUNA MOONGLOW (20s–40s)
Monique's former understudy. Sweet, energetic, and carrying a life-changing secret that turns the weekend upside down.
LAWRENCE GOOSEBERRY (50s–70s)
The playwright and host of the retreat. Once celebrated, now struggling creatively while trying to hold together both his guests and his beloved estate.
Harbor Theatrics welcomes performers of all backgrounds, identities, abilities, and experience levels. Whether this is your first audition or your hundredth, you'll be greeted with kindness, respect, and encouragement.
We believe theatre should be a safe harbor for everyone. We are committed to fostering a rehearsal environment where every artist feels valued, heard, and supported.
And if you've ever worried that community theatre has a "secret handshake" or that you have to know the right people to be welcomed... you don't. There are no cliques, no insider passwords, and no secret handshake at Harbor Theatrics. Just a group of people who love creating great theatre together and can't wait to welcome new faces into our family.
We hope you'll join us on July 27 and become part of the Harbor community.
