About the Play:
In 1940s New York, the performer who everyone wanted to see live was Florence Foster Jenkins, an enthusiastic soprano whose pitch was far from perfect. Known as “the first lady of the sliding scale,” she warbled and screeched her way through the evening to an audience who mostly fell about with laughter. But this delusional and joyously happy woman paid little attention to her critics. Instead, she was surrounded by a circle of devoted friends who were almost as eccentric as she was.
Based upon a true story, the play spins from Florence's charity recitals and extravagant balls, through to her bizarre recording sessions and an ultimate triumph at Carnegie Hall in this hilarious and heartwarming comedy.
About the Characters:
Florence Foster Jenkins
Age: 70’s
Line Load: Heavy, Lead
Ethnicity: Any
Character: Florence has been a part of New York society for decades, although her money is running out. She is a kind, thoughtful woman who was raised in wealth, married young to a cad who had the good manners to die young. She is generous to a fault – and the thing she is most generous with is her . . . “astonishing” voice. She is utterly clueless to the fact that she has no singing ability and believes that she is one of the great divas of her time. The actress who plays this role must have sufficient singing ability to imitate the dulcet tones of the real FFJ. Although this is not a musical, Florence will be singing. We do have a musical director to help find the mark.
Cosme McMoon
Age: 20’s- 40’s
Ethnicity: Any
Line Load: Heavy, Lead
Character: Cosme is an accomplished pianist, hired by Florence to accompany her in several concerts. Cosme is gay, but an oblivious Florence keeps trying to set him up with women. The actor who performs this role will pantomime playing a piano keyboard facing downstage, no ability to play piano is necessary.
Maria
Age: Any
Ethnicity: Latina
Line Load: Medium, Major Supporting
Character: Maria is Florence’s Mexican maid. She speaks English, but chooses to speak Spanish, even though none of the other characters in the play understand her. No nonsense, sarcastic, but also cares for Florence.
St. Clair Bayfied
Age: 50’s-60’s
Ethnicity: Any
Line Load: Heavy, Lead
Florence’s English boyfriend. He is an actor, who has been in the States for many decades and has been in a relationship with Florence for more than 20 years. He is a competent but not overly successful actor. Not necessarily handsome, but charming and kind. Devoted to Florence.
Dorothy
Age: Similar to Florence
Ethnicity: Any
Line Load: Medium, Major Supporting
Character: Dorothy is Florence’s longtime friend. They travel in the same society circles. A bit of a kook.
Late 40’s-60’s
Ethnicity: Any
Line Load: Heavy, Lead
Mrs. Verrinder-Gedge
Age: 30’s-60’s
Ethnicity: Any
Line Load: Light, Minor Supporting
Character: Florence’s nemesis. She is a voice teacher for more accomplished singers and strongly objects to the ridiculous spectacle of Florence’s recitals. Imagine her chagrin when Florence is given a date at Carnegie Hall!
