Fiddler on the Roof tells the story of Tevye, a Jewish milkman in 1905 Russia, who struggles to maintain his Jewish traditions as his three oldest daughters challenge the custom of arranged marriages by falling in love with men of their own choosing. Amidst generational and cultural conflict, his family and their community face escalating anti-Semitic pressure that ultimately forces them to leave their village and the only home they have ever known.
Fiddler on the Roof is a beloved Tony Award Winning Musical with over 6 Broadway Revivals and many National Tours.
(CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS)
Tevye: He is a pious Jewish milkman who values tradition and faith above all else.He is the father of 5 daughters and the husband to Golde.He try’s to navigate the changing social dynamics as his girls begin to challenge traditional customs. Tevye often speaks directly to God and the audience,showing a philosophical side full of dreams and wishes. He is a robust character,with a keen sense of humor and excellent storytelling. VOCAL RANGE: Baritone
Golde: Tevye’s wife of 25 years and the mother to their 5 daughters. Golde is pragmatic,sharp-tongues and resilient.She copes with there hardships,through strength,grit and a dry sense of humor.She deeply loves her family and although she’s often exasperated by Tevye,there’s warmth and affection there.The role requires a talented actress capable of conveying a range of emotions,with great comic timing.
VOCAL RANGE: Mezzo-Soprano
Yente: Yente is the village matchmaker and a busybody who loves to gossip.Despite her comedic character,she also represents the constraints of the traditional society on women.The requires a funny character actress with a knack for comedic timing. VOCAL RANGE: Mezzo-Soprano
Lazar Wolf: A well off butcher and a widower . Lazar Wolf is initially chosen to marry Tzeitel. he is a respected member of the community,but his dreams of marrying Tzeitel are dashed, when she
chooses Motel. Lazar Wolf is a complex character,requiring a strong character actor.and singer.
VOCAL RANGE: Baritone
Tzeitel: She is the eldest daughter of Tevye and Golde and the first to challenge traditions. She is Marley in love with Motel the Tailor and in a desperate crying scene,she persuades her father to let her marry Motel in spite of the fact that Tevye made a match with Lazar Wolf,who is old enough to be her father. Strong Dramatic Actress. VOCAL RANGE: Soprano/Alto
Hodel: She is the 2nd eldest daughter to Tevye and Golde. Hodel becomes involved with Perchik and eventually leaves Anatevka to be with him in Siberia where he is imprisoned for his reform activities. She and Perchik defy tradition by not asking permission to wed.She eventually gets Tevye’s blessing. Hodel sings the haunting solo,”Far From The Home I Love” as she says goodbye to her father at the train station. VOCAL RANGE: Soprano
Chava: She is the 3rd eldest daughter to Tevye and Golde. Chava is Tevye’s scholarly,middle daughter who loves reading.She falls in love with the Russian soldier Fyedka and eventually elopes with him. This huge break from traditions breaks her father’s heart and Chava becomes dead to him.
VOCAL RANGE:Soprano/Alto Hodel
Shprintze: She is the 4th eldest daughter to Tevye and Golde .She has few spoken line,but needs to have good stage presence and reactions.She takes lessons at home from Perchik and appears in several scenes. She is also part of the ensemble. VOCAL RANGE: Soprano/Alto
Bielke: She is the 5th and youngest daughter to Tevye and Golde. She has few spoken lines,but needs to have good stage presence and reactions.She takes lessons at home from Perchik and appears in several scenes. She is also part of ensemble. VOCAL RANGE: Soprano/Alto
Motel The Tailor: Great character role needing someone who can show Motel’s sensitive,nervous but loveable character.Great comic timing and the ability to show vulnerability. He is a meek and poor tailor. He seeks the hand of Tevye’s eldest daughter,Tzeitel.He clashes with Tevye’s idealistically. He is charming and ultimately accepted as part of the family. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor
Perchik: Perchik is a visitor and outsider to Anatevka. Actor must show intensity and unfailing commitment to his radical beliefs.He should be able to hold his own against Tevye’s as he clashes with him. Perchik is likeable,charming and ultimately an accepted part of Tevye’s family.
VOCAL RANGE: Tenor/Baritone
Feydka: Feydka is a Russian soldier who falls in love with Chava,Tevye’s 3rd Eldest Daughter. he is kind and stands against prejudice,representing the change in the outer world.He and Chava elope because Tevye’s cannot accept this total break in “Jewish Tradition”. He stands up to Tevye.
VOCAL RANGE:Tenor
Grandma Tzeitel:She is Goldie’s deceased grandmother who appears as a ghost in the “Dream Sequence”.She has a great solo,in which she endorses the marriage of Tzeitel and Motel.This person will double in the Ensemble. VOCAL RANGE: Mezzo-Soprano/Alto
Fruma Sarah: She is the dead wife of Lazar Wolfe who appears in the “Dream Sequence” to warn Tevye’s and Golde not to allow Tzeitel to marry Lazar Wolfe or dire results will befall the family.She has a show stopping solo and have an amazing presence.This person will also double in the Ensemble..
VOCAL RANGE: Mezzo-Soprano/Alto Belt
Constable:Strong character role.Russian military official stationed near Anatevka. He knows the villagers well and likes some of them,especially Tevye’s.These friendships do not prevent him from violence against the Jewish Villagers and carries out the orders for them to leave Anatevka. He is part of Ensemble. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor/Baritone
Rabbi: The Rabbi is the Jewish spiritual leader. mostly an acting role. He is part of the ensemble.
VOCAL RANGE: Tenor/Baritone
Mendel: He is the son of the Rabbi. Smaller Acting Role. He is part of the ensemble.
VOCAL RANGE: Tenor/Baritone
Mordcha: He is the Inkeeper of the local bar and is a good friend of Tevye’s. They are also part of
the ensemble. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor/Baritone
Avrum: They are the Bookseller. Small acting part and also part of the ensemble.
VOCAL RANGE: Tenor/Baritone
Fiddler: Small Stature and Great Stage Presence.Featured throughout the show.Must be great at playing the fiddle/violin.
Shaindel: She is Motel’s mother and a villager. She is part of the ensemble.

Rivka: She is a villager and part of the ensemble.
