Auditions will consist of readings from the script. If you would like a low-pressure opportunity to practice a professional audition, you should bring a one-page acting resume with a headshot and prepare a two minute monologue. If that’s a little too overwhelming or you don’t know what any of that means, come anyway and just read from the selection provided! Walk-ins welcome!!! We will work in your audition around the people who have slots.
SIDES: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SZK_PG6_kF8a3KkJZXYi2atzfgoXSIYwXNpso47IEZg/edit?usp=sharing
We are also looking for folks interested in building sets, designing, stage management, crew, board ops, ushering, etc. If you would like to be involved behind-the-scenes, please sign up for a slot and plan for a tech interview! Feel free to bring a tech resume and/or pictures of past productions or related hobbies.
Auditions open to current and former PPSC students, staff, and faculty. The PPSC theatre Department is committed to diverse and inclusive casting, so all genders, sexualities, ethnicities, abilities, body types, and ages are welcome!
Please contact [email protected] for further questions.
ABOUT THE SHOW:
Sarah Ruhl’s EURYDICE retells the myth of Orpheus from the perspective of his wife, Eurydice, who dies on her wedding day and journeys to the underworld. There, she reunites with her deceased father and struggles with memory loss, choosing between her life above with the musician Orpheus and staying with her father in the Land of the Dead.
Full script available for perusal: https://dochub.com/m/shared-document/sarahshaver/Zxz7E3jVBnyJ19lVlWd2G8/eurydice-by-sarah-ruhl-pdf?dt=sYkN_NoVTLZq6r_jpt6J
CHARACTERS:
EURYDICE: A playful, bookish, slightly clumsy young woman. Whimsical and warm, but capable of recognizing a threat when she sees one.
HER FATHER: Resident of the Underworld, watches Eurydice from afar, gently cares for her after her death and helps her remember details of her life. Sings, but doesn’t have to be good at it.
ORPHEUS: A talented musician and composer who prefers music to words, he is very much in love with Eurydice. I am interested in casting a performer who plays an instrument or sings.
A NASTY INTERESTING MAN/THE CHILD/THE LORD OF THE UNDERWORLD: A malevolent, polite, and lecherous stranger. Wants Eurydice for his bride. Could be open to non-traditional casting or doubling.
A CHORUS OF STONES: They live with the dead people in the Land of the Dead. A Greek chorus–a mix between the Muses in Hercules or like naughty children at a birthday party. 3 stones are listed, BIG STONE, LITTLE STONE, LOUD STONE, but I am open to multiple chorus members who would double as movement/dancers, musicians, stage hands.
CONTENT ADVISORY:
Themes of death and memory loss.
Actors playing Eurydice and Orpheus may be in romantic contact with each other.
Actors playing Father/Eurydice may be in familial, comforting contact with each other.
Actor playing Nasty Interesting Man may have suggestive, menacing contact with Eurydice.
