Alfie Byrne is a bus conductor in 1964 Dublin whose heart holds secrets he can’t share with anyone but his imagined confidante, Oscar Wilde. When he attempts to put on an amateur production of Wilde’s Salome in the local church hall, he confronts the forces of bigotry and shame over a love “that dare not speak its name.” But the redemptive power of theatre changes his life and brings his friends back to his side.
All roles are open to individuals aged 18 and older of any ethnicity or gender identity. See below for a character breakdown. We will ask you to sing selections for the show, which can be found on the auditions page of our website (bunburyplayers.weebly.com). Please dress comfortably. Headshots and resumés are preferred but not required. You may be asked to stay after for callbacks, in which you will be asked to do cold readings from the script.
Performances will be at the Edison Club in Rexford on June 20th, 21st, 27th & 28th at 7 PM and June 22nd & 29th at 2 PM.
Rehearsals will be at the Prince of Peace Church on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-9 PM and Sundays from 1-5 PM, beginning April 22nd. You are not required to attend all rehearsals; however, you are required to attend all tech rehearsals at the Edison Club (June 15-19th).
If you have any questions, please email [email protected].
Alfie Byrne – A closeted virgin and a dreamer who idolizes Oscar Wilde. He runs the theatre group in the church. He is in love with his coworker Robbie but wrestles with his sexuality throughout the story. Lives with his older sister, Lily.
Robbie – Alfie’s coworker and closest friend. He is charming, honest, and likable.
Lily Byrne – Alfie's older sister who lives with and cares deeply for him but finds him odd. She is socially and morally conservative and believes she can’t marry Carney until Alfie finds a wife.
Adele Rice – A girl new to Alfie's bus route who he thinks will be perfect for his play. She is a young, sweet, “small-town” girl who is wise beyond her years.
Carney – The local butcher who is the usual star of Alfie’s productions and loves to boast about it. The most socially and morally conservative member of the community and secretary of the church’s sodality. Wants to marry Lily. Also plays Oscar Wild, Alfie’s obsession, and a famous playwright who appears to be seen only by Alfie.
Mrs. Grace – A long-time member of the players who takes her acting and painting quite seriously – and believes others should too.
Mrs. Patrick – The mother of three children, she is a company member of the players and active in the church sodality.
Baldy – The resident stage manager at St. Imelda's. Widower who still misses his wife.
Ernie Lally – An accountant and the company set designer and props master.
Father Kenny – The parish priest who runs St. Imelda’s Church, where the players perform.
Miss Crowe – A spinster and the company costume designer who also fancies herself a very experienced actress.
Mrs. Curtin – An actor and choreographer in the company. She was a “child star” and has since married with nine children. Loves to get out of the house and into the theatre.
Peter – The young stagehand with the players who sees the future in rock & roll. Also plays Breton Beret, a guy from the pub who seduces Alfie.
Rasher Flynn – The company technician and an ex-All-Ireland gymnast.
