SYNOPSIS
Evita is based on the historical story of María Eva Duarte de Perón, a poor Argentinian girl who grows up to be the wife of the president of Argentina, worshipped by her people. As a young woman who longs for an acting career, fame, and fortune, Eva quickly learns that her feminine wiles hold power among a culture, and a political system, run by men. Once she makes it to Buenos Aires, Evita finds fame and power in her powers of seduction, eventually seducing the rising political figure, Juan Perón, who becomes the President of Argentina. As First Lady of Argentina, she aligned herself with the poor, winning herself, and Perón, popularity among Argentinians. Evita becomes a hero to the poor and the working class¬—and an enemy to the rich. A young and unknown revolutionary, Che, narrates the rise and fall of the beloved matriarch of the Argentinian people. This blockbuster musical, made even more famous as a 1996 Hollywood film starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas, shows both the righteous determination, and the ruthless power, of Argentina’s 20th century matriarch.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

EVA PERON (female identifying)
Lead
Vocal range: Mezzo-soprano.
Age range: Plays ages 15 through 33
Eva is a beautiful, ambitious and power-seeking woman, who rises to become the spiritual leader of Argentina by the age of 26. She must be able to play a vivacious 16-year-old girl (at the beginning of the show) as well as a sophisticated 30-year-old diva. She must be able to project both toughness and charisma. She is also a woman of few options, who uses her sexuality to build power. The actor playing this role must be a trained vocalist with strong vocal stamina and excellent control: a legit mezzo with a clear, strong mix that can belt to a high G and sing to a low E (below middle C) who must also be a passionate and strong actor who can move well.

CHE (male identifying)
Lead
Vocal range: Tenor
Age range: 21–35
The narrator. Must be able to relate to the audience and take them with him on the dramatic journey of the piece. Che is dashing, impulsive, jealous, and manipulative. He is a political activist (modelled on the actual Argentine-born Cuban guerilla fighter Che Guevara but according to the authors, he is only supposed to be representative of all activists). He isn’t reluctant to ask tough questions and demand answers. Latin American in personality and feel, hand gestures, impulsive. He must be an actor/singer who can move very well with a high, rock tenor voice that can sing a low A to high B, falsetto to high F.

JUAN PERON (male identifying)
Lead
Vocal range: Baritone
Age range: 32-50
Juan is an officer in the Argentinean army who rises, driven by his wife Eva, to become the Argentine President. He is a man who is dignified, charming, and authoritative. He should be a strong actor and singer who can play both character and leading roles. Move well and provide a strong sense of authority on stage. Military posture and physicality. Vocal bass/baritone to high F.

AGUSTIN MAGALDI (male identifying)
Featured (doubles as ensemble)
Vocal range: Tenor
Age range: 30-40
Magaldi is a tango singer with whom Eva has her first love affair. He is a charming loser who never quite made it. He has the first big number in the show, On This Night of a Thousand Stars, and sets up the world in which Eva exists by establishing a Latin flavor to the piece, which is essential. He will also appear in the ensemble. He should be able to portray a Latin American “personality” type with a feel that needs to be bigger than life, but real at the same time. He provides some good comedy moments. Good comedic timing. Moves well. Possible CHE understudy. Sings high tenor High G.

PERON’S MISTRESS (female identifying)
Featured (doubles as ensemble)
Vocal range: Mezzo-soprano
Age range: 16-21
The Mistress is a very beautiful, fragile, vulnerable, innocent young woman who plays Juan Peron’s teenaged Mistress. She is "dismissed” out of Peron’s life by his future wife, Eva. The Mistress ponders the rejection during her featured song, Another Suitcase in Another Hall. She will also appear in the ensemble. One big number and a possible EVA understudy. She must be able to move well and sing a low A to a high E.

ENSEMBLE:
Age Range: 16-50s
As Argentina is a large European melting pot with many different ethnicities in its countries, we are seeking a broad range of males and females of all ethnicities. Good singing voices. Will play everything from Generals to Rich and Peasants. A fully featured, versatile ensemble that helps define this world. Strong dance ability encouraged. The ensemble carries the show of Evita and will be featured very heavily throughout the show. Tango dancers are highly encouraged to audition.
