SYNOPSIS:
A smash comedy hit in London and New York, this much-revived classic from the playwright of Private Lives concerns fussy, cantankerous novelist Charles Condomine, who has remarried but finds himself haunted (literally) by the ghost of his late first wife, Elvira. Clever, insistent and well aware of Charles' shortcomings, Elvira is called up by a visiting “happy medium,” the eccentric and flighty Madame Arcati. As everyone's personalities clash, Charles’ current wife, Ruth, is accidentally killed. She “passes over” and joins Elvira, allowing the two “blithe spirits” to haunt the hapless Charles into perpetuity.
CASTING NOTES:
-Casting 7 performers.
-Must be 18 or older to audition.
-ALL ages & ethnicities are encouraged to audition for ALL roles. Ages listed for each character are stage ages.
Charles Condomine (40-50 y/o, male)
A witty, urbane novelist. Intelligent and charming, but emotionally evasive. Charles prides himself on rationality and is amused—at first—by the supernatural events around him. His dry sarcasm and bemused detachment slowly unravel as he becomes trapped between two wives, one living and one spectral.
Ruth Condomine (35-45 y/o, female)
Charles’s current wife. Practical, brisk, and socially polished. Ruth has a strong desire for order and good taste, and she is often exasperated by Charles’s flippant humor. Initially skeptical of anything supernatural, she becomes increasingly tense and jealous as Elvira’s ghostly meddling grows.
Elvira (25–40 y/o; often played as a few years younger than Ruth; female)
Charles’s first wife, now a mischievous and glamorous ghost. She is playful, flirtatious, and a bit selfish. Elvira delights in causing chaos, particularly when teasing or undermining Ruth. Despite her ethereal presence, she feels vividly alive—impulsive, dramatic, and determined to reclaim Charles’s attention.
Madame Arcati (50–70; flexible; eccentricity more important than exact age; female)
A well-meaning but eccentric medium. Enthusiastic, unselfconscious, and delightfully odd. Madame Arcati genuinely believes in her gifts and takes her work very seriously. Her grandiose rituals and sudden bursts of physicality add comic energy to the play.
Dr. Bradman (50-65; male)
A pleasant, somewhat pompous local doctor. Skeptical of the occult, he humors Charles while quietly judging Madame Arcati’s antics. Represents the “sensible” English professional class.
Mrs. Bradman (45-60; female)
His cheerful and talkative wife. Easily excitable and a bit naïve, she provides light comic relief, especially in early scenes. Her curiosity about séances contrasts with her husband’s doubt.
Edith (18-30; female)
The Condomines’ nervous, overly eager maid. Edith rushes about chaotically, trying so hard to please that she often creates accidents. Her frantic energy subtly underlines the household’s growing disorder.
