AUDITION NOTICE‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ by Oscar Wilde
Playing dates: 19th Feb to March 1st 2025
Audition date: Sun 10th November 2024 - 18.00
Characters:
John Worthing – a respectable young man – late 20s/early 30s
Algernon Moncrieff – a more bohemian young man – late 20s/early 30s
Lady Bracknell – his aunt – early 40s
Hon Gwendolen Fairfax – her daughter – early 20s
Cecily Cardew – Mr Worthing’s ward – late teens
Miss Prism – a governess – 40+
Rev Canon Chasuble – 40+
Merriman – an elderly butler (doubles with) Lane – an ex military manservant – 40+
This classic is often played as an arch chamber piece, stuffed as it is with memorable quotes and characters. I think, however, that it is a far ‘sexier’ play than this, full of unspoken passions simmering just below the surface. I plan to excavate this side of the play and in the process, unearth even more comedy…
Forget your preconceptions – let’s have some fun with this one!
