Synopsis
Set in the cold, 1990s landscape of London over four and a half years, Closer is a brutal, darkly comic "sexual square dance" which explores the fragile intersections of love, desire, truth, and betrayal through the intertwined lives of four strangers whose relationships evolve through attraction, manipulation, and emotional confrontation. With razor-sharp dialogue and unflinching honesty, the play examines the complexities of intimacy and the emotional consequences of human connection.
Performance Season: 28 October – 07 November 2026
Venue: The Bakery @ 1812 Theatre, 3 Rose Street, Upper Ferntree Gully.
NOTE: This is an unpaid, independent production. There is no performance fee or superannuation attached. The production is covered by public liability insurance.
AUDITION DETAILS
AVID Theatre invites submissions from committed and professional performers for our upcoming production.
Dates: Tuesday 7 April & Thursday 9 April 2026
Time: 6:30pm – 9:30pm
Location: 312 St Kilda Road, Southbank
Applications Close: 31 March 2026 at 5:00pm
Applicants will receive confirmation of their allocated audition time by 3 April 2026.
Callbacks (if required): Tuesday 14 April 2026 (evening)
AUDITION FORMAT
Auditions will be conducted in scheduled 30-minute sessions and will include:
• A prepared one-page monologue (of the auditionee’s choosing; contemporary text preferred)
• Two cold reads from provided sides
• A brief movement assessment
Sides will be supplied at the audition.
SELF-TAPES
Self-tape submissions may be considered where attendance is not possible.

Role Available – Alice
Character Brief:
• Female-identifying performer, early 20s to early 30s (all ethnicities encouraged to apply) other considerations: LGBTQIA+ welcome & Disability inclusion.
• “A girl from the town” — a young woman with a mysterious past; works as an exotic dancer
• Fierce, playful, emotionally intelligent; sexually confident yet deeply vulnerable
• Strong emotional range essential
Performance Requirements:
• Must be comfortable performing choreographed movement for Act II’s strip club sequence (in performance-appropriate costume)
• Dance or movement training highly desirable. The successful applicant must be available for three, one hour dance sessions with a professional dance choreographer.
• Must be comfortable with staged intimacy; an Intimacy Coordinator will be engaged to ensure safety, clarity, and consent
• Please note: The strip club sequence will be choreographed in consultation with the performer and a qualified Intimacy Coordinator. No full nudity is required. Modesty garments will be utilised as appropriate. All intimate scenes will be rehearsed and performed in accordance with established consent and safety protocols.
• Accent Requirement: An American accent is required for this production. Dialect support will be provided to assist performers as needed.

Applicants must be aged 18 years or over and understand the physical and emotional demands of the production.
Rehearsal & Performance Schedule
Rehearsal Period:
Commencing 25 August 2026 through to late October 2026
Regular Rehearsals:
• Tuesday evenings (6:00pm – 9:00pm)
• Thursday evenings (6:00pm – 9:00pm)
• Sunday evenings (6:00pm – 9:00pm) T.B.C.
Rehearsals will average approximately 12–15 hours per week.
Lines Down:
Performers will be expected to be off-book by Sunday 4 October 2026.
Technical Rehearsals:
24–27 October 2026 (evening calls; extended hours may apply)
Performance Season:
28 October – 7 November 2026
