All Maria and Callum want is the perfect Marvel meets Disney wedding…or do they? While the bride and groom each have their own serious doubts about getting married, a rabble of friends and family gather for the big day. The wedding guests have too much to drink, place bets, bicker and nearly die of starvation.
Grandma Pat is getting fed up with waiting. The groom's brother unwittingly becomes the victim of a strange game of cat and mouse. Uncle Chris accidentally spills wine on his sister's girlfriend. The groom’s divorced parents can't stand to be near each other, and the maid of honour is trying not to lose her mind.
I Do Not is a snappy yet curiously thoughtful comedy, taking a modern look at what it means to be in love, and if marriage is really worth more than the paper it’s written on. Ridiculous in places, and touching in others, I Do Not offers an updated view on what commitment really means.
If you’re an actor looking for a production that’s a little silly, very fun and full of heart, then I Do Not is the perfect play for you. Each character gets their moment to shine, as well as be amongst the chaos of the wider group, bouncing off each other in some delightful mayhem.
Female Roles:
Maria (F, 20s to mid-30s) – the bride. Naïve, excitable, impulsive, and strong willed. To summarise: a handful. Some intimacy involved.
Anneli (F, 20s to mid-30s) – Maria’s maid of honour. A very tired realist, trying to steer a very excited and then very stressed bride. Some intimacy involved.
Terri (F, 30s – early 60s) – Laura’s current partner. Eerily unphased by the chaos of the day. Some optional intimacy involved.
Laura (F, 40s to mid-50s) – Maria’s mum (and Grandma Pat’s daughter). A cool mum, but sometimes blunt and self-centred. Some optional intimacy involved.
Janine (F, 40s to mid-50s) – Callum’s mum (and Cillian’s ex-wife). A little shallow but means well.
Grandma Pat (F, mid-60s to 80s) – Maria’s grandmother. An extremely patient woman with an open mind and dry wit.
Stacey (F, late teens – early 20s) – a waitress. Quiet, but smart. Hates her job.
Male Roles:
Darren – (M, late teens) Callum’s younger brother. A classic awkward teenager; antisocial and hates everything and everyone, other than Maria.
Callum (M, 20s to mid-30s) – the groom. A hopeless romantic but emotionally immature. A nerd at heart. Some intimacy involved.
Richard (M, 20s to mid-30s) – Callum’s best man. A Golden Retriever of a man; genuinely a good guy. Some intimacy involved.
Christopher (M, 30s) – Maria’s uncle (and Grandma Pat’s son). Unashamedly camp and proudly gay. A throwback to a classic lovie and doing absolutely nothing to hide it.
Cillian (M, 40s to mid-50s) – Callum’s dad. Grumpy, petty and quite bitter as a person.
Any Gender:
Carol (any gender, any age) – the celebrant. Believes wholeheartedly in what they do.
The auditions are open to anyone. This is a story about family, and families come in different shapes and can look wildly different; from varied age gaps between generations, through to adoption. I do not need cast members to share any kind of family resemblance.
Please also note that part of the play explores LGBTQ+ themes, and the rehearsal room will be a safe space for members of that community. If this doesn’t align with your personal outlook, please consider whether this is the right production for you.
Rehearsals will be Tuesday and Thursday and then Sundays, with the final week having a fourth, as we build up to opening night. Rehearsals will start the very last week of Dec. I will try and build a rehearsal schedule that doesn’t require everyone at every rehearsal, but I do expect good availability from everyone.
