CHERYL- A ROCK OPERA
Attila and Otway met in the 80s and got on like a house on fire. (Not literally, fortunately.) They decided to team up for the 1990 Edinburgh Fringe and did a show called ‘Headbutts & Halibuts’ - their hilarious translation into German of Bachman Turner Overdrive’s ‘You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet’ indicative of the kind of nonsense they came up with. They enjoyed the gigs a lot, and more importantly, so did the audiences, so they decided to return the following year.
Otway just wanted to do the same stuff all over again (‘the set remains the same’) but Attila was having none of that. He had an idea to delve deeper into Otway’s show-stopping song ‘Cheryl’s Going Home’. Why is she going home – to Slough of all places – and who's her horny friend Billy? Attila knows. He spills the beans about Cheryl’s escapades in stentorian Chaucerian narrative verse. Otway responds with a series of ever more pathetic excuses in song. Then MC Trainspotter turns up...
‘Cheryl – A Rock Opera’ is an everyday story of Satanism, trainspotting, drug abuse and unrequited love: It is ridiculous, poignant and it has a goat in it. It was a big hit at the 1991 Edinburgh Fringe and was released on CD, recorded and produced by Otway’s guitarist Richard Holgarth.
To celebrate its 35th anniversary Attila and Otway have decided to revive it, and Richard has re-recorded it for streaming platforms and a limited edition CD run.
The first half will feature Attila doing new poems from his new book, and Otway doing exactly the same stuff he's been doing since 1977.
