Atlanta Film Freak Society celebrates Noirvember with a marathon of four hard boiled crime thrillers produced by independent and “Poverty Row” studios. Shot on two weeks schedules with minimal budgets these films were merely “quickie programmers” meant to fit the bottom half of double bills and destined to be nothing more than forgotten B pictures. But with resourcefulness and ingenuity these Film Noir’s pack a punch with plenty of twists and stylistic flourishes to make them stand the test of time. We kick things off with Edgar Ulmer’s masterpiece Detour (1945) which features Ann Savage in perhaps the most fierce and twisted Femme Fatale performance in the entire genre. Followed up next by Woman on the Run (1950) which is a “shot on location” mystery yarn that will leave you guessing until the shocking rollercoaster set climax. The Guilty (1947) has its roots in pulp fiction short stories and takes the inherent “limitations” of a handful of cheap sets and characters (including one actor pulling double duty playing twins!) into a pot boiler of suspense. And the evening of morally conflicted characters and stark shadows concludes with Decoy (1946) which stands out as an oddity in Film Noir by combining heist and horror movie elements. These classics are “lean and mean” clocking in at a little over an hour apiece and offer inspiration for all future filmmakers by showing that you don’t need money or stars to tell a compelling story.
