At the Crossroads: Ancient Voices
Prayer Before Power — Reading the Greek Magical Papyri

At the Crossroads continues this September with the beginning of a new arc: Ancient Voices.
Over the past several months, we have explored Hekate through her epithets, building a devotional practice around the threshold, the road, the torch, the key, and the light. Now we begin turning toward some of the ancient voices that preserved prayers, invocations, and magical practices connected to Hekate.
Our first stop is the Greek Magical Papyri, a collection of surviving texts from Roman Egypt containing prayers, hymns, invocations, ritual instructions, healing practices, magical workings, and more.
But we’re not beginning with the spells.
We’re beginning with prayer.
Together, we’ll explore what the Greek Magical Papyri actually are, where they came from, and what they can—and cannot—tell us about ancient practitioners. We’ll read selected material connected to Hekate and look at the ways prayer, praise, relationship, and reverence existed alongside magical practice.
This is not about recreating ancient religion or treating an old text as an instruction manual. It’s an opportunity to listen, study, ask questions, and consider what these ancient voices might teach us about our own devotional and magical relationships today.
Before there was power, there was reverence.
Before there was a request, there was relationship.
No previous attendance at At the Crossroads is required. Beginners and experienced practitioners are welcome.
