Asura - Villain in the Making
Join Bharatanatyam artist Dr. Himanshu Srivastava as dance, music, and visual art blur the lines between good and evil, giving voice to legendary antagonists from Indian mythology to explore the hero and villain within us all.
Through the lens of Indian mythology, ‘Asura – Villain in the Making’, conceived and performed by Bharatanatyam and visual artist Dr. Himanshu Srivastava, revisits the stories of Shakuni, Kumbhakarna, and Mahabali – figures remembered as asuras and antiheroes – reflecting on the turning point at which they chose their darkest selves, examining whether it was a choice they made or a path laid out before them.
Using Bharatanatyam as its central language, the production brings together dialogue, live singing, experimental music, Indian and folk percussion, and visual art projections. It does not seek to justify their actions but to explore the ideas of dharma, justice, and judgment through perspectives often missing from familiar retellings.
Known for his bold interpretations of mythology, Dr. Srivastava combines classical movement with painting, sculpture, poetry, and theatre to create a visually layered, thought-provoking production that challenges audiences to reconsider what makes someone an asura.
This performance is supported by Reliance Foundation.
