The Astronomy on Tap Las Cruces is back this Thursday 11/14/24 6:30pm at the Boneyard Cantina downtown. Come join us for a fun evening of an astronomy talk by Dr. Joe Burchett about "Why are galaxies so gassy?", pub trivia, and prizes!Because science is even better with beer!
More details (abstract) for the talk:
Astronomers have nearly ruled out a diet heavy in beans and cheese, but the gas clouds detected around galaxies seem to play an essential role in galaxies’ lives. I will discuss how astrophysicists study the gaseous halos of galaxies (hint: not by smell) and how gas flows in and out of galaxies are key to their fortune or fate, include the silent-but-deadly ejections of gas by supermassive black holes.
