About:
Join the ASME Philadelphia Section for an evening of celebration, networking, and recognition of member and student member achievements. The event will include informal poster presentations by engineering student teams from our region presenting their senior design projects. The keynote speaker for the event is Dr. Jeffrey Ashley, College of Life Science, Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Ashley will provide us with an introduction to environmental science, an important field not typically covered by mechanical engineering curriculum. A multi-course buffet will cap off the evening event.
Keynote address: The Element of Change: Tales form a Biogeochemist's Career
Dr. Jeff Ashley will take you on a whirlwind tour of his research career centered on biogeochemistry and how it supports knowledge for engineers to think about how to create solutions to solve pressing environmental problems.
About the speaker:
Jeffrey Ashley has been an educator and researcher for the past two and half decades at Thomas Jefferson University East Falls Campus (formerly Philadelphia University). He values high impact learning experiences such as engaging undergraduate students in meaningful, authentic research practices and incorporating study abroad/away opportunities into his courses. Recently, Jeff was the Director of Philadelphia University’s Center for Teaching Innovation and Nexus Learning where he, in his words, “taught teachers to teach even better”.
In 2025, Jeff was the recipient of the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Chemical Society’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in Chemical Science.
Jeff’s biogeochemistry research, focused on identifying the source, transport, and fate of pollutants in aquatic ecosystems, has spanned 30 years and includes over 30 peer-reviewed publications.
