Asialink: In Conversation with John Young AM
About this Event
John and Rachel will explore the role of artistic practice in opening new ways of seeing Asian-Australian visual cultural development, and the long‑term work of building spaces for inter-cultural dialogue, reflection and exchange.
Drawing on more than four decades of artistic practice and cultural leadership, John will reflect on:
- His engagement with Asia beginning in the 1990s, participating in cultural exchange initiated by Australian cultural institutions, including Asialink, across Southeast and Northeast Asia before such work was widely recognised as a tool of cultural diplomacy
- The development of History Projects, a body of work spanning two decades that reimagines historical narratives, from global events to the overlooked visual histories (1840-1966) of Chinese Australians
- His longstanding commitment to advocacy for Asian–Australian artists and communities, including the co-founding of the 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Sydney and the making of Open Monument, dedicated to the largest 19th century Chinese community in Australia, in Ballarat.
