Directed by Lee Sang-il, Kokuho (meaning “national treasure”) is a 2025 Japanese historical drama spanning five decades in the lives of two aspiring Kabuki actors. After his father’s death, young Kikuo Tachibana is taken under the wing of a master kabuki performer and raised alongside the master’s son, Shunsuke. Their shared devotion to the demanding art form - and the complex emotional and professional rivalry that emerges - serves as a meditation on tradition, identity, and artistic sacrifice within the hallowed, exacting world of classical Japanese theatre.
The film premiered at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight and became one of Japan’s highest-grossing live-action films, earning selection as Japan’s entry for Best International Feature at the Academy Awards and a nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
“A visual knockout and deeply moving tribute to art and devotion.”
