Directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien, A City of Sadness is a cornerstone of Taiwanese cinema and one of the great historical films of the late 20th century. Set during the turbulent period following Japan’s withdrawal from Taiwan, the film traces the gradual disintegration of a family amid political violence, repression, and silence.
Hou’s restrained style - long takes, distant framing, and elliptical storytelling - refuses melodrama, instead allowing history to seep quietly into everyday life. The result is a deeply humane portrait of memory, trauma, and the costs of political upheaval.
