Join Haunted Rooms America for a six-hour after-hours ghost hunt at Ashmore Estates, one of the most notorious haunted locations in the Midwest. Featured on Ghost Adventures, Destination Fear, and Death Walker.
It began as the Coles County Poor Farm in 1870. The first almshouse crammed the destitute, the elderly, and the mentally ill under one roof, with the violently insane left to live among the rest. By 1911 the building had been condemned: vermin in the walls, food cooked in filth, almost no ventilation. More than a hundred people are believed to have died here. The unmarked graves of the forgotten still lie at the northern edge of the property.
The building that stands today rose on that ground in 1916. It served as an almshouse, then a psychiatric facility, then an overcrowded state mental hospital, until the last patients were moved out in 1986 and the doors were locked. Decades of neglect followed. Whatever was left behind never left.
Heavy footsteps in empty halls. Bangs and crashes with no source. Shadow figures moving along the second and third floor corridors. Voices caught on recorders. The sense of being watched, followed, and touched.
Elva, the little girl said to have burned to death here in the 1880s, is heard laughing in the halls. Guests describe a small hand slipping into theirs, then gone.
Joe, struck by a train and said to have limped all the way back to the poor farm before he died, is still seen inside and outside the building.
Two women upstairs, believed to be former patients, respond when visitors read aloud to them: voices, sudden EMF spikes, sounds from an empty room.
And then the boiler room and the stairwells, where Ashmore earns its reputation. Guests report being pushed and shoved. More than one investigator has walked out of this building and sworn never to return.
