What is Local Cloth?
Local Cloth is a volunteer-led non-profit network of more than 500 fiber artists, farmers, small-scale fiber processors, educators, and fiber enthusiasts, dedicated to growing and supporting the fiber economy in Western North Carolina and increasing awareness of and access to regional production and artisan practices.
At a personal level, we are a community of generous, talented artists and teachers and fiber fanatics who encourage each other, and bring along other folks with an interest in fiber crafts to broaden their knowledge. We have workshops—everything from needle felting to sewing to knitting to natural dyeing techniques, weaving and more. Our interest groups vary in number of meetings per month but all provide an opportunity for folks to share their passion for mending, dyeing, sewing, spinning, weaving, knitting, handwork, and the study of textiles. One of our tag lines is “Creativity, Connection, Community,” and we mean it.
Until September 27th, we had a thriving Retail Shop with over 60 vendors represented. We sold gifts, clothing, and accessories all made by our vendors in Western North Carolina. We also had a Maker Space which included yarn, roving, fabric, batts, natural dye seeds, carved wooden tools for the crafty among our customers. One of the projects of which we are most proud is the Blue Ridge Blanket Project which is a “sheep to blanket” project, grown, dyed, and woven in WNC. In September, we won a “Best of Asheville” award for Best Boutique Store from the Asheville Media Group for our retail shop.
And then the storm hit, filled the studio full of 11 feet of water, and here we are. Taking our show on the road!
