Cutie Pie is a rowdy dark comedy about the issues with traditional masculinity, the conquest of women, and having a sexy clenched jaw. Hiding behind memory foam pecs and male rage, Cutie Pie straddles men, women, and everyone in between and penetrates our collective ideals of manhood.
Cutie Pie is a one man show, written and performed by a woman that uses absurdity and physical comedy to satirize masculinity. Based entirely on personal experience as a woman constantly being watched by men, Cutie Pie imagines the psyche and inner monologue of the attractive, suave guy at a bar who’s hitting on the bartender. He’s the guy that something “feels off” about but you just can’t put your finger on it. Cutie Pie explores the deep insecurity at the core of it all without letting this excuse the problematic male psyche that this culture has created. Pulling on anecdotes from years of restaurant work and often quoting real life men directly, in a way, Cutie Pie wrote itself. Though absurd and very comedic, the most disturbing thing that an audience is left with is just how non-fictional it is.
Though Cutie Pie is most simply a story about a man pursuing a woman, it could just as easily be about the capitalistic American ideal that people can and should be taken, owned and controlled. It’s a very relevant and important piece that addresses these issues and the dehumanization of individuals. It’s not just a story of our personal relationships, but of the infantile men we see in power, and the infantile people who keep them there. It's a begging of people– men, women, both, neither– to see and respond to these issues within themselves and on a larger scale.
About the Artist
Sonja Kinney is inspired by the horrors of the world and yet an immense love that drives her to want to change them into something beautiful. Her work comes from a desire to help people see themselves differently– whether that means giving women an opportunity to reauthor their stories with an empowering voice, or to compassionately suggest that even the good, nice, upstanding versions of masculinity might have blindspots. She’s most passionate about doing so through the use of satire, absurdity and dark comedy to tear apart what appears to be normal in daily life and reveal the underlying barbarity. She believes that the questions worth asking are not the ones with easy answers or maybe with answers at all. And that is where art and performance come in. Sonja will graduate from SOU with a BFA in Acting in Spring 2026.
