About this Event
Abstract:
Come with me on a journey of exploration as we look at artificial intelligence through the lense of a geophysicist. Let's talk about where we are today, how and why we got here, and where the path may lead into the future for all geophysicists open to broadening their understanding and skills in the use of artificial intelligence. It's going to be a fun and scary (at times) ride! There's no height requirement for this rollercoaster.
Bio:
Mikayla Sambrooks graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2020 with a Masters' degree in geophysics, winning the D.E thomas medal for "Best MSc thesis with a substantial field mapping component (including geophysical techniques)" presented by the Geological Society of Australia. Then, went on to complete a year of field work with TerraSearch, including walking 750km of ground magnetics in far north Queensland (in the wet season!) where she became familiar with the harsh reality of remote campaign-style field work (and trench foot). Moving to Perth at the start of 2021 she commenced the exploration geology graduate program with Newcrest Mining. During the program she experienced the FIFO lifestyle while supporting the development of a world-class gold exploration project at Havieron. She graduated early to enter her first official role as a geophysicist toward the end of 2022. In this role she supported brownfields and greenfields exploration activities throughout the deeply-buried terrain of the Paterson region, integrating new and legacy geophysics and petrophysics data to reconcile near-misses and explore the potential for new targets. Since then she has thrived through a company take-over, now working with a team of 11 as a geophysicist for the world's largest gold mining company; Newmont.
