About this Event

Join artist Jude Walsh in this handson creative workshop to turn memoryladen textiles into unique wearable art pieces.

Inspired by the exhibition Beautiful Tensions: Gray Street Workshop celebrates forty years, this Arts on Site session invites participants to explore creative ways of giving new life to textiles, clothing, and small objects that hold personal meaning.

Many of us keep garments, scraps of fabric, or tiny items tucked away in drawers; pieces we cannot quite part with because they carry memories.

In this workshop, creatives of all experience levels are invited to bring these materials and share their stories (if you feel comfortable) – then transform them into unique wearable pieces.

Using simple embroidery and jewellery‑making techniques, Jude Walsh will guide you through the process of reimagining your forgotten textiles and objects as contemporary adornments.

From well‑worn shirt cuffs to buttons and small keepsakes, this workshop offers a gentle and creative way to honour the stories they hold.

About the workshop

  • This workshop is suitable for adults (18+) of all experience levels.
  • All materials are provided, though participants are encouraged to bring personal textiles or small objects to incorporate.
  • Location: Queen Victoria Art Gallery at Royal Park, 2 Wellington Street, Launceston.

About the artist

Jude Walsh is a silversmith, painter, and maker of objects whose practice spans jewellery, textiles, and mixed‑media forms. With many years of teaching experience at TAFE, Jude now works as a mentor with Interweave Arts, facilitating programs for people of all abilities. She is also a regular contributor to the REMADE Wearable Art Show, where her work explores storytelling, material memory, and the expressive potential of reclaimed objects.

About the exhibition

In celebration of Gray Street Workshop’s 40th anniversary, JamFactory presents Beautiful Tensions, a major touring exhibition honouring the momentous legacy and talent of the workshop by showcasing new work by the four current partners: Jess Dare, Lisa Furno, Sue Lorraine and Catherine Truman.

Established in 1985, Gray Street Workshop is one of Australia’s longest running collectively run studios for artists working in the field of contemporary jewellery and object making.

The uncompromising commitment of this group of artists to their work and to studio-based practice has enabled Gray Street Workshop to evolve into one of Australia’s most exciting and respected workshops.

Beautiful Tensions: Gray Street Workshop celebrates forty years is a JamFactory touring exhibition supported by the Visions of Australia touring program, an Australian Government program aiming to improve access to cultural material for all Australians.
