About this Event
L. Mela Mutter, Polish, 1876 – d. Paris, 1967, Portrait of the Artist’s Mother, c. 1910, Private Collection. R. Henry Ossawa Tanner, American, (active in France) 1859 – 1937, Sarah Miller Tanner, the Artist’s Mother, c. 1897. National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC.
Join Robert Bunkin in a virtual tour of great portraits by great artists, both well-known and obscure. After self-portraiture, portraits of mothers are perhaps the most intimate form of self-representation. Although we seldom know much about the lives of these women, the connection between child and mother runs deep in most cultures. The selection will span from Renaissance to contemporary works, including Dürer, Rembrandt, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Tanner, Neel, and Freud.
Robert Bunkin is a painter, curator, art historian and educator, with a BS from CUNY and an MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. He has taught art history and studio art in several NYC art schools, universities, colleges and museums.
